UNSC Army Troopers by theAVERAGEGAMER UNSC Army Troopers by theAVERAGEGAMER
Two examples of uniforms used by the UNSC Army and Marines. Left: Enlisted Combat Uniform. Right: Military Police Uniform.

Why did they trade the Marines for the Army in Halo: Reach?
Bad trade. The Army AI's Die a lot faster. My opinion.

*I don't own this image. I think this is the original:

Im just guessing for this but my best guess for why they were army in the game rather than marines is that the army is tasked with planetary defense. while the marines would be primarily stationed on space stations and ships with just a few located on marine bases planetside.

Pretty much. I'm not really up to speed on Halo lore but that was what I gathered playing the game

nor me I made that assumption based on my experience in the US Army, Marines are a Naval based force and as the Navy is huge in Halo I imagine the marines are equally large

Most of the UNSC forces encountered in the games are Marine Corps, but the ground forces in Reach are predominantly Army. Don't quote me because I can't remember my source on that, but I remember finding out myself and being all "Whaaa...?". The Marines did come into play later in that game I think, but you never really did much fighting along side them (and, being Halo's shitty AI, they never really did anything to help anyway) . Also, I think the ODST's are either Navy or Marines. I know they were Navy at one point but I don't know when the lore says the units transferred. In kind of gave up on Halo after 4. It's just not the same anymore :(

Great drawing, and personaly I think the UNSC army has better armor than the Marines do in halo 3.

It's actually just a stock concept art taken from a Bungie artist. But yeah, I am under the assumption that (since the Marines in CE Anniversary wear the same gear) that the latest look that the concept artists have for one branch overrides the old look for all previous games. In short, the newest look is how all UNSC troops were meant to look.

Its because the UNSC Marines served on the Navy's ships. UNSC Army was land based, they usually dont work with the Navy on operations the way the Marines did. The reason why it was the Army was because the Marines were out serving on the UNSC Cruisers while the Army stayed back and guarded wherever they were needed.

I knew that, but still? Whenever bungie left the Marines in charge of something in Halo, it got done, but when they left the army in charge of defending Reach, they failed. (even though the odds were completely stacked against them...)
